wrecked_vanPost 10 Georgia State Patrol Troopers and Terrell County Sheriff’s officials responded to a vehicle chase on GA Highway 520 outside of Dawson around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Terrell Co. Sheriff’s officials spotted a suspicious white Mercedes Benz van that had crossed the median twice, just north of Jimmy Rains Road and Federal Aid Road . Officials caught up to the van, performed a traffic stop, and then called GSP for assistance.

Shortly after GSP troopers arrived on the scene, the driver jumped back in the van and took off, initiating the chase. Troopers had to perform the PIT maneuver three times in order to run the van off the road. The driver was apprehended after the van came to a stop in the grass.

Sheriff confirms probe in Meigs

Thomas County Sheriff Carlton Powell confirmed on Friday that he has launched an investigation into the events that led to Meigs Municipal Court being canceled for the second month in a row and the mayor’s nephew’s charges being dismissed.

Powell said, “We’ll look into why it was canceled. It’s hard to say what happened without looking at the (Meigs city) charter. We’ve got to look into the whole nine yards. It’s going to be time consuming.”

Meigs City Council Member Dorothy Wimes formally requested the sheriff to investigate Tuesday’s court proceedings.
