A woman whose car was stolen Sunday morning is getting it back after police in Tallahassee caught up with the suspect.

A resident of Wisteria Drive in Bainbridge advised he went outside to crank up his girlfriend’s car, a 2011 Ford Taurus, to help her as she got ready for work.

Just after walking back inside, the man heard a loud boom outside and when he looked outside, a man was in the car backing the car out of the carport.

“Stop!” the resident yelled, but the spooked suspect only sped up, causing the car to back into a wooden fence next to the home.

Bainbridge Public Safety officers put out a “Be on the Lookout” alert for the vehicle, notifying area law enforcement about the stolen vehicle.

At about 12:45 p.m. Sunday, BPS Officer Pat Bryant received a phone call that Leon County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office had located the stolen Ford Taurus on Meadowlark Lane in Tallahassee, Fla.

Lawrence Danell Akins, 30, was identified as the driver of the Taurus and Sheriff’s deputies took him into custody. In addition to the Bainbridge charge of theft by taking a motor vehicle, Akins also faces charges in Florida for damage to government property and threatening a law enforcement officer.
