The Bainbridge Bearcats will take the field tonight against the Cairo Syrupmakers for a preseason scrimmage at Centennial Field and these two programs don’t need a whole lot to be motivated to play one another. The game will kick off at 7:30 pm and the first two quarters will be full scrimmages featuring specials teams and all.
The Syrupmakers are coming off of a 9-3 season where they were able to reach the second round of the state playoffs but will have a new head coach after Tom Fallaw stepped away from the sideline for an administration job. New Head Coach Steve Devoursney looks to replicate Fallaw’s success in the Syrup City and judging by his record at Griffin, it won’t take long for Coach Devoursney to have the Syrupmakers at the high level expected by the fans in Cairo.
The Bearcats are coming off of a 6-5 season which included a trip to the playoffs as well where Bainbridge was narrowly defeated in the first round by West Laurens. The Bearcats enter their third year under Head Coach Jeff Littleton who claims that this is the deepest & most team he has had in Bainbridge since he arrived in 2013. In the few practices that I’ve been able to watch, the Cats definitely pass the eye ball test and are bigger across the line than many of the previous Bearcat teams.
The first half of the game will a regular scrimmage with full special teams with ten minute quarters. If there has been no scoring in the first half, there will be a two minute drill featuring two timeouts along with full kickoff and kickoff returns. The 4th quarter will be junior varsity and freshman players for each team with no special teams and each team receiving the ball on the 35-yard line.
Since these two teams are bitter rivals and region opponents, I don’t expect the two coaches to bust open their playbooks but instead work on some basic fundamentals and simple plays and concepts. Either way, it will be live high school football which means that I will be in attendance.
There will be a $5 ticket price at Centennial Field for tonight’s scrimmage. The Bearcats will play the Region 1-AA Pelham Hornets next Friday night in their second preseason scrimmage at 7:30pm at Centennial Field. The first regular season game will be Friday, August 28th against Region 1-AA opponent Early County Bobcats at Centennial Field.
