Bainbridge State College is pleased to announce the “One Matters” reward recipient for January.
On January 26, Jessica Harrell, the Health Science and Professional Studies Success and Retention Specialist, was named the “One Matters” reward recipient. She was nominated by her colleague, Kathy Marshall, who has observed Harrell’s dedication and support to BSC and its students even through difficult times.
In early November, Harrell was scheduled to attend a Retention Conference in Louisville, Ky. However, just a few days before the conference, she and her mother were involved in a car accident.
Harrell suffered from cuts and bruises on her head, face and body. Regardless of these injuries, she chose to attend the conference in an effort to benefit her department, college and students.
“Due to her injuries, Jessica was unable to sit comfortably and had to sit on the edge of her seat for the entire conference,” said Marshall. “I doubt most people would have done what Jessica did, and that’s why she deserves the “One Matters” award.”
Each May during graduation, Harrell gets the ultimate reward of seeing her students receive their diplomas.
She said, “There is nothing more rewarding in my job than to see a student that I’ve been able to work with walk across the stage and receive his or her diploma. It reminds me that I got to be a part of that student’s success and how they have touched my life. This is why I go to work every day.”
Harrell’s door is always open to assist students, whether it is helping them directly or guiding them to resources that can answer their questions.
Last fall, the “One Matters” campaign was introduced to the faculty and staff by BSC President Dr. Richard Carvajal and his cabinet. It was designed to recognize BSC employees who make an extraordinary effort to ensure student success and retention. The recipient’s specific student success and retention story is shared with their colleagues and the community to help encourage one another by demonstrating how “one” mattered.
