During the faculty/staff drive portion of Bainbridge State College’s Capital Campaign, “Deeply Rooted. Future Driven,” a memorial scholarship was endowed by the faculty and staff of BSC to help young women achieve their dreams and honor the memory of one of their students and faculty member’s daughter.
Megan Hatton, the daughter of Melissa Harrell, BSC Interim Dean of Arts and Sciences and Asst. Professor of Criminal Justice; died unexpectedly on March 9, 2014, at the age of 25, while a student at BSC.
The scholarship was established through the desire for Hatton’s sweet spirit to live on and to continue her legacy of helping others. The scholarship also was established with a mission of helping young women achieve their dreams.
Harrell said, “I am honored to have the opportunity to share Megan’s sweet spirit and her dreams with others through her scholarship. I can think of no better way to honor my daughter’s life than to see young people realize their dreams.”
Hatton was known for her compassion to help both people and animals. Her passion for helping others was evident in her choice of study as an EMT because she loved comforting others.
“Megan was an amazing daughter and granddaughter and brought a great deal of joy and love to my life and the lives of her grandparents. She enjoyed life and helped others enjoy their life as well,” said Harrell.
The Megan Hatton Memorial Scholarship will be available to young women at BSC studying in the EMT program who maintain a 3.5 GPA.
Megan was one of my dear students at the Lighthouse. Nothing came easily to Megan, but she worked hard and had incredible perseverance and a desire to learn. I am so proud of the amazing young woman she became. We had talked on the phone about having lunch together, but she was taken out of this life before we could meet. She was caring, funny, smart and had the most beautiful Southern drawl you ever heard (which became even more pronounced when she was passionate about what she was talking about)! I’m so happy for this scholarship and recognition in her honor. 🙂 I know I will see her again in Heaven someday, but I really miss her! :'(
