Bainbridge State College Announces Fiscal Year 2018 Budget Decrease

BAINBRIDGE, GA –  Today, Dr. Stuart Rayfield, interim president of Bainbridge State College (BSC), announced plans to reduce operating expenses for fiscal year 2018 as a result of several years of budget shortfalls. Budget shortfalls at BSC are the results of declining enrollment, which led to a decrease in state appropriations and tuition income. Bainbridge State experienced a 42 percent decline in full-time equivalent in enrollment over the last five years.

Measures to right-size the institution and create cost savings include the reduction of staff positions, as well as combining some positions. BSC will eliminate 18 staff positions and not fill vacant positions, eliminating those positions. Further, operating budgets will be reduced and travel will be limited.

Today, managers informed employees whose positions will no longer exist after June 15, 2017.

“This is a very difficult day for our college. Bainbridge State College is facing a budget shortfall for which we must make very hard decisions,” said Rayfield. “The people who have been affected by this reduction in staff are wonderful people who have worked hard to create an environment for student success on our campuses. Their gifts and talents have been of great benefit to the institution and will surely be missed.”

Rayfield also said transition assistance will be available to employees impacted by the reduction, including: an update regarding insurance, resume writing workshop and Employee Assistance Program.
