Reckless driver killed after high-speed chase and head-on crash in Donalsonville

Seminole County Sheriff’s Office –
Press Release

On Friday, September 16th at approximately 7:20pm, Seminole County’s 9-1-1 center received notification from Jackson County Florida that they had received multiple calls of a red or burgundy vehicle, possibly a Chevrolet Equinox, driving reckless headed north approaching the state line.

The lookout was given to both Sheriff’s Office deputies and Donalsonville Police officers. Deputies Craig Carr and Tom Foster headed south on Hwy 91 in an attempt to locate the vehicle. Deputy Carr observed the vehicle on the wrong side of the road just after it crossed into Georgia. Deputy Carr attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver continued north on Hwy 91. The driver continued on the left side of the road driving at speeds up to almost 90mph, almost hitting oncoming traffic and forcing them off the roadway.

Deputy Foster, Deputy Jim Shingler, Deputy Will Owen, and SRO Deputy Jeffrey Lawson assisted in the attempt to stop the vehicle. They were joined by officers from Donalsonville Police Department near Hebrew Road in an attempt to stop the driver before entering the city limits and approach the area of the football field. The vehicle continued north bound, refusing to stop. Sheriff Elliott responded to Hwy 91 south to assist and the driver almost hit him head on.

At this time, the driver entered the city limits, still refusing to stop, and continuing to force other drivers off the roadway. The driver continued north on Tennille Avenue crossing Hwy 84 and the railroad tracks in the left lane, before striking a truck head on near Chason Ave.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Community Ambulance Service and Donalsonville Fire Dept were dispatched to the scene. Assistance was requested from Miller County EMS and Life-flight for the victims in the truck.

Georgia State Patrol was requested to investigate the accident, and any additional information should be requested from that agency.

Heath Elliott, Sheriff
