Bainbridge State, Darton State announce new interim presidents

ATLANTA — (Dec. 2) – University System of Georgia (USG) Chancellor Hank Huckaby today named Dr. Richard Carvajal, president of Bainbridge State College, interim president of Darton State College in Albany.

“Dr. Carvajal has done a tremendous job leading Bainbridge State through incredible change over the last almost five years,” said Huckaby. “We are confident in his ability to lead Darton State, especially through the consolidation process.”

“I am honored and humbled to have been asked to help lead Darton State College through such a historic time,” said Carvajal. “I look forward to working with Darton faculty, staff, students and supporters as we partner with our colleagues at Albany State University to build a new world-class university for southwest Georgia and beyond.”

Carvajal will assume his post on Dec. 16. He will replace Darton State College Interim President Dr. Paul Jones, who has been named president of Fort Valley State University.

Carvajal has served as president of Bainbridge State College since Jan. 1, 2011. As president of Bainbridge State, he has led the institution through accreditation reaffirmation, its first capital campaign, a move to state college status and a change in name.

Prior to his presidency at Bainbridge State, Carvajal was vice president for student success services at Cascadia College in Bothell, Wash.

Prior to that, he served as dean of student services at Independence Community College in Kansas from 2003 to 2006. Before that, he was the associate dean of student services at Coker College in Hartsville, S.C., from 1997 to 2003.

Carvajal holds a Ph.D. in educational administration with emphasis in higher education from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, a Master of Science degree in college student personnel administration from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, and a Bachelor of Science in mass communication/sociology from East Central University in Ada, Okla.

Shawn McGee Named Interim President of Bainbridge State College

ATLANTA — (Dec. 2) – University System of Georgia (USG) Chancellor Hank Huckaby today named Mr. Shawn McGee interim president of Bainbridge State College (BSC).

McGee currently serves as vice president of business and operations at Bainbridge State College.

“Shawn has shown a great capacity to lead,” said Huckaby. “We have no doubt that he will lead Bainbridge State with distinction and continue to serve its mission to educate the citizens of Bainbridge and southwest Georgia.”

“I am honored to accept this new role at Bainbridge State College,” said McGee. “I look forward to working with students, faculty and staff to assure BSC continues to meet the educational needs of southwest Georgia.”

McGee will assume his post on Dec. 16. He will replace Bainbridge State College President Dr. Richard Carvajal, who has been named interim president of Darton State College in Albany.

McGee has served as vice president of business and operations at Bainbridge State since March 2010. As the chief business officer, he has advised the president on all fiscal matters regarding the college and directs the development, review, revision and implementation of policies and procedures related to business operations.

Prior to his role at Bainbridge State, McGee was comptroller at Georgia Southwestern State University. He has also held several roles at the Georgia Department of Audits and Accounts Education Audit Division. His last role was as senior auditor and technology specialist.

McGee holds an associate degree from Darton College (Darton State College) and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Valdosta State University. He also became a certified public accountant (CPA) in 2002.

He and his family reside in Baker County, Georgia.
