Southern Football Report: Week 1 Superlatives

College Football PlayoffEvery week during the college football season, we here at the Southern Football Report will give out some superlatives from the previous week. We’ll do the same thing at the end of each month. So here we go with the first week of superlatives from college football.

MVP – Georgia RB Todd Gurley – Is it even a question? Junior GurleyBulldog runningback Todd Gurley racked up 198 yards on the ground for 3 touchdowns on only 15 carries as well as a game-changing 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown late in the second quarter. Gurley had limited touches in the first half in order to keep him healthy for the second half and boy did it show.

USC Logo 3Coach of the Week – USC Steve Sarkisian – The Trojans had every reason to come out flat against Fresno State Saturday night with all the fake heroic stories being told as well as the racism accusations from a runningback who left the team earlier in the week. Instead, the Trojans came out and racked up 701 total yards of offense and converted 11 of their 18 third downs. Sarkisian is a quarterback guru and his guy Cody Kessler had a career high with his first 300 yard passing game and was 6 yards away from his first 400 yard game.

Wisconsin LogoGame of the Week – Wisconsin v. LSU in LSU LogoHouston – These two teams had quarterback questions heading into the game and still have quarterback questions after they have left the game. The Badgers jumped out to a 24-7 lead over the Tigers and looked like they were on cruise control until Les Miles and his LSU Tigers woke up. Kenny Hilliard gave the Tigers their first lead of the ballgame with 9:41 remaining in the 4th quarter and it was fun to watch LSU hang onto the 28-24 lead.

Derek MasonCoach That Needs To Pick Up His Check At The Back Door – Vanderbilt Derek Mason – It’s really easy to say Vandy is Vandy but this Commodore team won 9 games in 2013 and Temple only won 2! The Owls forced 7 turnovers and the game was never in doubt. This wasn’t the start that Coach Mason had envisioned in Nashville.

Uniform of the Week – Navy Midshipmen – How can you not like the Midshipmen wearing their ‘Dress Whites’ against Ohio State? These are the classiest uniforms I have seen in a LONG time. Plus, you’ve got to love the cadets having their ranks on their uniforms.

Dud Uniform of the Week – UL-Monroe Warhawks – Unless you are a service academy, camo uniforms are a big no-no. There are more god-awful camouflage uniforms to come this season but UL-Monroe were the first ones out of the gate against Wake Forest. Just, no.
