Bainbridge State College, in partnership with the Development Authority of Bainbridge and Decatur County, will host a Canola Institute on Friday, August 8, 2014, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Charles H. Kirbo Regional Center.
This half-day workshop is designed to inform and discuss the demand and marketing opportunities of canola and canola oil. New and veteran canola producers, along with agriculture industry members, are encouraged to attend and join the conversations regarding the benefits of growing canola.
According to the U.S. Canola Association, the supply versus demand of canola oil in the United States is about 1:3, which presents a huge opportunity for U.S. producers to grow more canola. Canola is considered an ideal winter crop as it does not require additional, or special, equipment for planting and harvesting. Additionally, canola has been identified as a soil improver due to the nutrients it adds back into the ground which, in turn, helps boost yield rates for other crops.
The UGA Extension Office of Decatur County will provide experts from the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences to discuss topics ranging from production best practices to weed and insect control. There will also be a forum for questions and answers along with open dialogues outlining the ways canola can support local industries and the economy.
The Canola Institute is a free event with breakfast, snacks and lunch provided. Reservations are required.
